July Update | Protein Overload I had a week off work at the end of July (for good behaviour of course!) and I didn't do much with my hair.
I tried my hand at making some flaxseed gel in the kitchen....success. I also baked in-between: mini-loaves of apple and cinnamon as well as one big loaf of banana and walnut bread. See what happens when I have time on my hands? Did I mention I also made cupcakes and real chocolate brownies at the start of that week? Anyhu, back to the hair. I decided my medium-sized twists seemed to get very frizzy very quickly (within a week) and re-doing them was not appealing to me that often. After all, I managed to keep kinky twists in for a month at a time between re-touches of the front and sides every 2 weeks. I slowly but surely replaced the twists with box-braids. This took a couple of evenings because I would only spend 30 mins to an hour on my hair each evening. I used my flaxseed gel to achieve the look. I also used some flaxseed gel when re-doing the flat twists on the sides of my head to make them lay smoother. It seemed to work. However, by Thursday, I noticed everytime I reached up to touch my bang area and my bun, it felt HARD. Dry and hard. Hmmmmm! Then I would spray my moisture spritz on it and baggy overnight. It STILL feltl hard 10 mins after removing the baggy in the morning. I was in protein overload. This was quite a shock as I am usually on the side of moisture overload, on the protein-moisture balance. On reviewing my recent hair practises (read 'laziness'), I have been neglecting the regular co-washes and deep conditioning treatments that used to keep my hair so supple and soft! What did I do about the protein overload? Well, I moisturized of course! A deep treatment overnight with honey and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). This was rinsed out in the morning and followed by a moisturizing co-wash. The next step was to modify my hair spritz. Out went the Infusium 23 (bye bye old friend), in came the honey added to the water and aloe vera mix. My hair is still not back to its supple best but it's getting there. I mayl have to step up the co-washing though. Maybe after every workout (sweat may be making my hair feel yuckier too - not a real word? Oh, well!).
