Meetup | Midlands Natural Hair Meetup 2012

All Ages Welcome!
I was invited to go and present on "Transitioning" at this event and I was honoured to be a part of such a wonderful meetup! It was held at the Custard Factory in Birmingham. Myself and Sister E, from the Calabash Hub, decided to catch the train down together. On arrival at Birmingham New Street, imagine our joy at seeing the lovely Rachelle and Charlene, from the Goody Box UK!

Off we wondered, on foot, to the venue. At one point, we couldn't seem to find an entrance but we soldiered on and we were there!

It was a lovely meetup featuring:
  • Poetry readings
  • Presentations on nutrition and transitioning
  • Headwrapping demo
  • Hairstyling demo: for women on the go!
  • Serenade by songstress, Justene; and
  • GIVEAWAYS.
We chatted, we laughed and some of us WON in the giveaways. We also got beautiful goodie bags with Keracare and ORS product samples!

Overall, colour me impressed! Well organised and a lovely atmosphere.
If ever I need an excuse to go down to Birmingham, this would be it!

Can be achieved with curlformers set or rollet set. Then tease gently apart and add flower.

Hair is flat rolled inwards on both sides and the ends are pinned inside. Add mini-veil and trinkets.
This collage is to show what you can achieve with rollerset hair or curlformers. Pin-curls with cute little adornments take a bun to a new level!

Never underestimate how much difference a bit of hair bling can make! Don't forget the hair candy!
For more intricate dos, plan ahead and I would recommend doing them more than a day or two in advance (so no wedding day headaches)!

Enjoy!

Natural Bride | Wedding Styles to crown your day!

I was asked by a lovely natural with sisterlocks to find some cute but practical wedding hairstyles.
Here goes!

Above style created by sectioning off the bang area. Dividing the back  into two. One half in a side bun, the other in pin-curls. The bang is then pinned and added to the pin-curls. Cowry shells finish the look!
Two-strand twisted styles mimick locs very well! Anything twists can do, locs can do better...lol! ;)
Simply, pull locs over to one side and pin. An added dimension would be to pincurl the side left out here!
Curls from bantu knot-out - pulled up into a high bun with the bangs left out. A white braided band applied over the front and veil behind the bun finish off the look!

How-to:
- Washed with TRESemme’ Naturals
- Detangled with TRESemme’ conditioner
- Deep Conditioned with EVOO + Pantene Relaxed & Natural Breakage Defense Mask
- Twisted 8 sections of my hair to stretch and dry it
- It didnt dry in enough time for the wedding so unfortunately had to blow dry lightly it without any protective product
- Used coconut oil all over for some shine
- Then used to Cinn-a-bun method developed by Motorcitymoxie on youtube.
- Slicked backed edges using Elasta QP Glaze Conditioning Shining Gel
- Pulled my hair back using a stocking like a headband
- Instead of tucking and pinning each piece of hair straight back, I twisted each peice so it would eventually roll up on itself and look like a mini dounut and pinned it securely.
- Did this all over my head starting from the hairline then toward the middle.

Healthy Hair Meetup UK | We came, we saw, we were beautiful!

Picture
We came, we saw, we looked good doing it!
This is a quick post for those ladies (and gents) who were unable to be at the meetup, as well as a fun picture share with those who did attend! We had around 25 ladies turn up on Sunday and we were a nice international bunch. With folks from the States and Germany, we had a real mix of ladies (not to mention my buddy from Russia!).

The Elixir Bar really was a perfect venue with friendly staff and great multimedia backup. They were also very accommodating of our haircare obsessions! lol! It's good when your venue host knows the benefits of jojoba oil already!

We had three provisional sponsors when preparing for the meetup but for the day, we had 2 lovely sponsors on the ground: The Calabash Hub and The Goody Box UK!

With refreshments flowing, we jumped right into the presentations with a "Healthy Hair Basics" talk to start with. Then, a Q&A followed: important questions on pH, hair typing and regimens cropped up here!
We had two further presentations: a "Headwrapping demonstration" by Sis E of the Calabash Hub and a "Haircare Tips and Tricks" talk by myself.

In between presentations, we would chat, eat and browse the natural goodies on sale!

I really enjoyed the headwrap presentation - though I know most enjoyed it from the feedback we've received. I was touched by the generosity of both our sponsors on this event (helping with compiling the goodie bags and giving samples away!).

My final few words would be, look out for the next event on the 29th of April being organised by Sis E, a "Product Making/Kitchen Treasures workshop". It promises to be informative and hands-on so get your tickets early! I better go get mine!

The next Healthy Hair Meetup should be in mid-to-late June by God's grace (if not earlier!). It looks like hair conditioning with homemade treatments and twisting / braiding workshops are going to be the order of the day: from the feedback forms...yay!  I will get cracking on that one! Can't wait!

Ciao, lovelies!

Rhassoul Clay | A quick profile for the uninitiated!

What is Rhassoul Clay?
A gentle but effective beauty clay used for detoxifying, purifying and conditioning skin and hair

Origins:
Quarry-mined from the Atlas Mountain of Morocco or from lake-side deposits and sun-dried.
Used for over 1,400 years by nobility in Ancient Rome and Egypt.

Rhassoul Clay consists of:
•Silica- 58%
•Magnesium- 25.2%
•Aluminium- 2.47%
•Iron- 0.64%
•Sodium- 2.3%
•Calcium- 2.34%
•Moisture- <8%

Source

What it looks like?
Initially a brown polished soap-like rock /lump.
Micronized to a silken, smoother earth texture.
A light gray colour (untreated) as a powder.

It is Smetic (swells when water is added) (Source)
Makes a fine, smooth paste with water added.

Claims:
–Used in Ancient Rome and Egypt as a soap, shampoo and skin conditioner.
–Improves skin elasticity, clarity and firmness.
–Removes dead skin cells, improving smoothness.
–Removes surface oil on skin.
Source1 and Source 2

How to mix it: Uses
Face
–Mix 1 tsp with water/rosewater (anti-inflammatory)
–Leave mixture to hydrate for 5-10 mins
–Apply to wet face and leave for 10-15 mins.
–Keep damp with water spray or wet fingers.
–Rinse with fresh water.

Hair

–Mix 2 tbsps with lukewarm water (more if needed – I use 60g = 4tbsp)
–Form a paste
–Apply to hair from roots to tips.
–Leave for 20-30 mins with a shower-cap on
–Wash out thoroughly.

I've added 30mls of Aloe vera juice to this mix before with good results. Other additions I've liked include honey (for moisturizing) and marshmallow root-infused water (for extra detangling).

How I found it on my hair?
–I only need a little amount to get the job done.
–Easy to make a smooth paste!
–It really detangles my hair (gives slip): as I rinse each section, I detangle with my fingers.
–Hair is soft and smooth from root to tip.
–I’ve stuck with this every 1-2 months since first trying it!
