Hair growth facts!!

All our hair care measures are aimed at seeing hair growth. However, we must remember the basic facts about hair! Hair is actually dead the minute it leaves the root! If it wasn't you would feel pain when it is cut. I'm not talking about the emotional pain...lol!
Given the above is true, what can we do with it to get longer hair? We PRESERVE it!

On average, hair grows at a rate of 1.25cm (0.5 inches) in a month from the hair follicle (hair bulb). Some people's hairs grow a bit faster (0.75 in), whilst some are slower (0.25in). You will also find that your growth rate experiences a "spurt" (growing faster) in the warmer months or climates, and slows down at cooler times. However, on average, watching hair grow is like watching paint dry!

Click "Read More" to find out about the phases of hair growth!
Hair goes through three different stages in its growth cycle. These are:
  1. Anagen /The Growing Phase: This phase is responsible for producing new hair and lengthening the hair. This can go on for 3-7 years. The length of time varies according to race and genetics. This process is nourished by the blood vessels around the hair follicle (in the scalp). Around 90% of existing hair follicles are in this phase at any given time. As the end of this, the resting phase begins.
  2. Catagen /The Resting Phase: Once the follicle reaches this phase, it stops growing but maintains the hair at it's current length. It still receives nutrition from the scalp but the follicle begins to shrink and as the hair prepares for shedding. This phase lasts 2 to 4 months.
  3. Telogen /The Shedding Phase: This is the shortest phase of the cycle lasting a few weeks. The hair strands are released so that new hair can take its place. The follicle re-enters the growing phase for the hair cycle to be repeated again.  Each day, 50- 100 hair strands are in the shedding phase.
Hair growth is easily seen in ladies with relaxed hair as the roots grow out in their natural, curly/coily pattern  - often called "new growth". In order to see longer hair, you need to preserve the ends of your hair - the oldest parts of the hair strand.

Remember, by the time your hair ends reach your shoulders, they are around 2 years old. We preserve our ends by moisturising them, conditioning, adding protein to strengthen them and protecting them from drying elements (blow-dryers, flat irons, hot combs).
