Hair Journey Chronicles: to Deep Condition or not?

Hair Journey Chronicles: to Deep Condition or not?

Picture
I still find myself tripping on this point. Should I deep condition this week? Can I go for a while longer and just:
  1. Co-wash more often?
  2. Deep condition for longer next time?
Well, at the beginning of my healthy hair journey, I still didn't get it so I would just deep condition every 2 weeks.
I actually would co-wash 2-3 times a week so I thought that would do.

After a few weeks, I decided to deep condition once a week. This way, I could cut down on the co-washing.

I noticed my hair was indeed softer after deep conditioning overnight (my way of not sitting under a dryer or heating cap). I would rinse and shampoo and then condition quickly.

Now, I had not really figured out the moisture-protein balance of my hair. I thought since I was relaxed then, I really needed moisture. Boy, was I wrong? My hair became a mushy mess everytime water touched it! I decided to try a hair mayonnaise treatment (medium protein). My hair felt stronger and more manageable.

I have settled on the protein side of the protein-moisture divide, even as I started texlaxing.

I realized that, for me, my demarcation line needed to strength more than moisture since I had already quit shampoo for co-washing (a firm fave!)

These days, I still favour protein but I'll either choose conditioners that also have moisturizing properties,  or medium protein conditioners (not too strong).

My deep conditioning is now done every month! Don't worry, I have re-discovered baggying (covering moisturized hair with a plastic cap to increase its' absorption into the hair). I do this 5-7 nights a week inbetween deep conditioning sessions.
