Youtube Faves | More length check videos! Confession time: I love length check videos! I would do more just so I could watch them! Here are a few I've enjoyed recently! WhoIsSugar But Sug....your hair is LONG! Yep! I love her hair and the sass she gives on her channel! Jazzybee445 I really like this channel1 She's got me wanting to try the Shea Moisture line: mainly their shampoo which doesn't strip your hair....anyone want to send it to me? lol! Cherry818
I only just found this channel but I'm liking her length! And a great hair style too! Youtube Tips | Quick tips for preventing breakage! These are just a couple of the videos that I've noticed and liked on my subscription list on the YT. Enjoy! Type F is for "Failure" OK, I was just minding my business, checking some Long Haircare Forum after a 2 week hiatus when I stumbled across a thread called: "What the Hayle?!" Needless to say, my attention was piqued. Little did I know what fun I had in store. I clicked on a few links and soon I was watching what must have been a good natural hair comedy.....right? Right? Wrong! This foolishness was for real! Apparently "hairstylists" giving expert advice on natural hair and styling. TypeF: a youtube channel that I had no idea about - part of a Tyra Banks Initiative to help out with make-up, fashion and beauty advice - was the platform for these wretched videos. Advice such as: "How to put down an Afro" and "How to tame unruly Curly Hair", which involve using a paddle brush on un-moisturized, dry natural hair and putting a curling iron on hair for 60 seconds, respectively. Did I mention the hair the heat was being applied to is a wig (and like the Great Wall of China, can also be seen from space!). Oh and phrases like, "the essential tool for this style are YOUR HANDS" are just, well, foolish! Thankfully, a lot of these, well offensive and mis-informed videos have been taken down. Meanwhile, a new one was posted today (26th Sept 2011). See for yourself! Now, we all love a good parody! Here are two for your (visual) delectation! Youtube Faves | Inspiring Naturals/Length Check Shelleybean729: I first started tuning in when her channel was Sexysuggarshelley! She big chopped and looked good with it! She told us her feelings about missing her length but quickly embraced her natural hair. She is now 2 years post-BC and her hard work has obviously paid off! Drool-worthy (watch the end of this vid to see what I mean!) Allthatsgold: In her videos, she shows so many hairstyles -mainly protective. However, she also does wear it in wash and gos and braidouts. She does great reviews but her length after 2 years is wonderful! MyNaturalSistas: I've only recently (in the last few months) stumbled happily across this lovely family of naturals! They are inspiring both health-wise and hair-wise. Above is India's hair length check at 2.5 years post-BC! This must be for my birthday this month (so I get to enjoy all these length checks!). Kandeelovesya:
I've watched her since she started transitioning. I fell out of the loop for a few months and suddenly, she's natural and rocking it! I love her creative styles and her hair growth is great too! YouTube Faves | Vloggers ULoveMegs: I first came across her on Hairlista.com! She is so down-to-earth and I love her twin, Ashley too! Enjoy her hair and non-hair related videos. Glamazini (aka Roshini)
I love this young woman's wisdom, honesty and fun! She laughs at herself and keeps it real! Her hair - she's a banging natural - is on point and she does switch it up with the occasional wig. You can also check out her blog here. YouTube Faves | Hair Crushes Of course we all have ladies online whose hair makes us drool! So here are a few of mine on youtube! Enjoy! Hair Crush (aka Chime, aka ManeCrush): I've admired this head of hair from fotki whilst she transitioned. Now as a natural all I can say is, wow! You go, Chime! Bronzeqt: I love how well she styles her hair. I have not mastered braid or twistouts yet, but once I do, watch out! Lots of ideas for hairstyling and on a gorgeous head of hair! Cipriana, UrbanBushBabe:
I love her hair! This is my ultimate Type 4 hair dream! It's big, it's fierce and it's in an updo! Yay! I can't wait for this length natural hair. In the meantime, I check out UrbanBushBabes.com as often as I can for their blogs on style, life and hair! Thanks for tuning in! Later! July Update | Protein Overload I had a week off work at the end of July (for good behaviour of course!) and I didn't do much with my hair.
I tried my hand at making some flaxseed gel in the kitchen....success. I also baked in-between: mini-loaves of apple and cinnamon as well as one big loaf of banana and walnut bread. See what happens when I have time on my hands? Did I mention I also made cupcakes and real chocolate brownies at the start of that week? Anyhu, back to the hair. I decided my medium-sized twists seemed to get very frizzy very quickly (within a week) and re-doing them was not appealing to me that often. After all, I managed to keep kinky twists in for a month at a time between re-touches of the front and sides every 2 weeks. I slowly but surely replaced the twists with box-braids. This took a couple of evenings because I would only spend 30 mins to an hour on my hair each evening. I used my flaxseed gel to achieve the look. I also used some flaxseed gel when re-doing the flat twists on the sides of my head to make them lay smoother. It seemed to work. However, by Thursday, I noticed everytime I reached up to touch my bang area and my bun, it felt HARD. Dry and hard. Hmmmmm! Then I would spray my moisture spritz on it and baggy overnight. It STILL feltl hard 10 mins after removing the baggy in the morning. I was in protein overload. This was quite a shock as I am usually on the side of moisture overload, on the protein-moisture balance. On reviewing my recent hair practises (read 'laziness'), I have been neglecting the regular co-washes and deep conditioning treatments that used to keep my hair so supple and soft! What did I do about the protein overload? Well, I moisturized of course! A deep treatment overnight with honey and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). This was rinsed out in the morning and followed by a moisturizing co-wash. The next step was to modify my hair spritz. Out went the Infusium 23 (bye bye old friend), in came the honey added to the water and aloe vera mix. My hair is still not back to its supple best but it's getting there. I mayl have to step up the co-washing though. Maybe after every workout (sweat may be making my hair feel yuckier too - not a real word? Oh, well!). |
